I was given the opportunity to review The Story of Christmas by Thomas Nelson Books. “The Story of Christmas from the Read and Share™ Bible is a colorful retelling of the birth of Christ and the events surrounding it.”
This book is perfect for children from birth all the way up to early Elementary School. It is a great, colorful retelling of the birth of Jesus. The wording used was very appropriate for younger children. It does not contain older language such as ”thou.” I found it interesting that they even omitted the use of the word manger and opted for “where the animals were fed.”
It has very colorful and interesting illustrations, perfect for grasping the attention of young ones. The author also included questions at the bottom of each page, which helps to promote dialogue between the parent/child and gets the child to think more in depth about the story being told to them. I also like that they include photos at the end of the story, giving children the opportunity to retell the story. Story retelling skills are so important and something that is focused on in Elementary School, so this is a great way to practice at home with Mom and Dad!
The DVD that comes with it is just an added bonus! It includes not only video, but other resources such as coloring pages that can be printed out. Overall, I thought it was a great retelling of the birth of Jesus, very age appropriate and I can’t wait to read it to my little one.
